Growing momentum in investment to tackle plastic pollution, says Circulate Initiative

Last March, UN member states agreed on a resolution to create an international legally binding agreement to end plastic pollution by the end of 2024. While there is growing momentum to tackle plastic pollution, investment in solutions is still far below what is currently needed to meet the scale of the challenge.

A tracker recently launched by The Circulate Initiative found that only $850 million of private investment was directed towards ‘plastics circularity’ across emerging economies, on average, from 2018 to 2022. This was well short of the billions of dollars needed. Roughly 86% of this capital was directed towards Asia, but there needs to be more equitable distribution of capital, particularly towards early-stage solutions.
